A team of contractors led by The Pike Co. Inc. has been designated to design and build the new intermodal transportation center in Rochester, N.Y., New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald and U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) announced yesterday.
In addition to Rochester-based Pike, design-build team members include LaBella Associates, Kisan Engineering, Moffat & Nichol Engineering, Foundation Design, Joy Kuebler Landscape Architect and Atlantic Testing Laboratories.
A final contract and cost will be negotiated this summer, NYSDOT officials said in a press release. The agreement requires the state attorney general and comptroller’s approval.
Estimated to cost $29.8 million, the intermodal station that will be designed to improve station functionality and accessibility, reduce travel delays and enhance passenger amenities. Under an agreement reached in 2012, Amtrak will continue to own and operate the station on the site of its existing station at 320 Central Ave.
Funding for the project includes a $15 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) through the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program. NYSDOT and FRA provided $3.5 million in funding for preliminary engineering. In addition to the TIGER grant, funding for final design and construction includes $500,000 from the city of Rochester, with New York State Rail funds making up the remainder of project costs, NYSDOT officials said.
The larger station will include two additional passenger tracks and a new two-sided high-level passenger platform. Site parking, bicycle and pedestrian access will be improved, along with enhancements to landscaping and green space. The station will be constructed to allow for the addition of Greyhound and Trailways bus operations.
Preliminary site work by CSX Transportation will be performed this summer in advance of the design build team’s work, which is expected to be under way in the fall.
“With the partnership of the city of Rochester, Amtrak and CSX, the new intermodal station in Rochester will make passenger and freight-rail service more reliable and improve connections to buses and other transportation services, all at a beautiful, modern station that will complement local architecture and help reinvigorate the neighborhood,” said McDonald.
